Lock types and Security Levels

By definition a lock is a mechanism for keeping a door, lid, etc. fastened, and is typically operated by a particular key or combination. While simplistic it is an accurate definition – whatever you are trying to keep safe and secured, there is a lock system that can do that job for you. At Lock and Tech USA we love locks and security systems and throughout the years have installed, maintained and monitors thousands of them in NYC. Our Emergency Locksmith units are always fully stocked with a variety of lock systems at various security levels.

Most locks are constructed of some type of metal, usually stainless steel or brass. Popular residential door locks are made of brass, with a variation as to the amount of brass used to create the lock. High quality locks are made of heavy gauge (thickness) tarnish & scratch resistant brass. Lower quality hardware locks are usually made up of a thin gauge brass. Sometimes lower quality hardware may consist of brass clad steel or brass plated steel.

When considering the type of lock that best suits your security level and needs, these are some factors to consider:

Where is the lock going to be installed? Exterior doors and entry doors demand high security locks. If the door will be used frequently, you should consider the convenience of operating the lock before you have it installed. For example for the main entrance to your house, a deadbolt system that is keyed on both sides might not be the best choice as it will make it somewhat difficult to enter and exit the premises quickly and could be a safety hazard if you need to exit fast in the case of an emergency.

For privacy on interior doors, locks set with a push button lock on inside (called privacy locks) is a great option. If for some reason it locks by mistake, there’s an access hole where a special key, pin or paperclip can be inserted to open the lock. To secure a storage cabinet, a combination lock works well so having an actual key isn’t an issue and multiple people and employees can access the cabinet at any time.

A garden gate that needs to be opened for a gardener that is kept locked at all times may be a good place for a padlock installation. an accessible key can be kept nearby and this will offer great  convenience with a moderate level of security.  Additional lock types include mortise locks - which require a pocket—the mortise—to be cut into the door, window or piece of furniture into which the lock set is to be fitted and installed, electronic lock - which are usually operated by an electrical current or advanced magnetic technology or cylinder locks which contain a series of independently rotating discs housed in a tunnel or cylinder shaped body. Many times instead of replacing a lock we can advise you to re key it instead, saving you money and maintaining the security level of your lock.
